The Hot Club Of San Francisco • 30 Years

A 30 Year compilation of the best from America's longest-running and most amazing gypsy jazz band, led by internationally acclaimed guitarist/songwriter/producer/poet Paul Pazzo Mehling. Featuring 2-time Grammy Awarding winning violinist Evan Price and a host of other incredible musicians. A collection highlighting the breadth and depth of this venerable national treasure ensemble. A startlingly diverse program, '30 Years' captures the band's restlessly creative evolution with Hot Club arrangements of Thelonious Monk ('Round Midnight') and French Impressionism ('Claire de Lune'), Brazilian roots music ('Choros') and the Beatles ('Because'). Unmistakably inspired by the iconic Quintet of the Hot Club of France, the HCSF's book is unbounded by guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli's repertoire and rhythmic palette. 'People think of Gypsy jazz and think swing, but when you look closely there's not a lot of swing on this album,' Mehling says. 'We specialize in the unexpected. '

The Hot Club Of San Francisco • Postcards From Gypsyland

Unlike some of the gypsy jazz groups that are around today and very much dedicated to the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, the Hot Club of San Francisco have added quite a few new originals and offbeat material to their repertoire. The quintet/sextet, which differs from the Quintet of the Hot Club of France in its use of two violins on five of the 13 selections, plays tangos, waltzes, and some more modern tunes in addition to Django swing tunes. Guitarist Paul Mehling and violinist Evan Price are the main soloists, but all of the musicians are quite talented. Whether it be the heated "Lover's Leap," the haunting "Alle Prese Son una Verde Milonga," a vocalized version of "Nuages" (renamed "Theme from Gypsyland"), or "Song of India," this CD is a consistent delight that is full of surprising moments and fresh material. ~Scott Yanow

~Scott Yanow

The Hot Club Of San Francisco • Swing This

Editorial Review Editor: Giancarlo Davis The Skinny First and foremost, Hot Club of San Francisco pays tribute to the late great polyglot composer-jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. As a gypsy guitarist, Reinhardt created music that blended multiple styles, especially those of Eastern Europe and New Orleans, whose jazz sound was fast becoming popular throughout Europe at the time the guitarist emerged. The Hot Club of San Francisco captures Reinhardt's music and brings it into the 21st century. Barely wired for sound, the acoustic ensemble is led by founder Paul Mehling, a string instrument Renaissance man who plays guitar, violin, bass, plectrum and banjo. Hot Club's sprightly 'gypsy-swing' recalls Paris in the '20s, when Reinhardt and his brand of sweltering, string-oriented jazz was making Left Bank girls Charleston on cafe tabletops. Maybe it's gypsy magic: rumor has it Hot Club's got our gals doing it here, too. The Scene Anyone that likes hot jazz with their cold cocktail. Synopisis Over 11 years of parties, concerts, festivals (including the Django Reinhardt festival in France and Iceland, Seattle and Fresno) the QHCSF (Quintet of the Hot Club of San Francisco)appeals to both kinds of people with blue hair.
